The recall announcement comes to our attention from the state of Minnesota, whose Department of Health (MDH) was following up on a human case of salmonella linked to the pet food.

The person who had contracted salmonella infection “was identified as part of an ongoing, multistate investigation” of salmonella infections coordinated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

According to the MDA’s recall announcement:

“MDH’s interview of the person revealed that Woody’s Pet Deli raw ground turkey pet food was regularly fed to a pet in the household. The pet also tested positive for Salmonella, but not the outbreak strain. In February 2018, MDA and MDH investigated two other cases of Salmonella Reading that matched the outbreak strain and were linked to raw ground turkey pet food from a different manufacturer [Raws for Paws, recalled last year].”

The MDA’s recall announcement also reminds consumers that “Salmonella bacteria can survive for weeks in the household environment, which can serve as a continuing source of infection.”

At least 1 pet illness may be linked to the affected product as well. A woman commented on the Woody’s Pet Food Deli Facebook page:

“My dog did get very sick half way through feeding the 5 lb raw turkey a week ago. Unfortunately I no longer have the tub but the vet did suspect salmonella. Please be careful. I have fed my dog raw for 2 years and she did get very sick: bloody diarrhea & vomiting for 7 days. I would recommend returning any batches you may have.”

To which the company responded: “So sorry for the bad experience. Hope your dog is doing better.”
