Maker: Woody’s Pet Food Deli
Cause: Potential for salmonella

What was recalled: Woody’s Pet Food Deli Raw Cornish Hen With Supplements in 5 lb. tubs (PLU Code 5230) and 15 oz. containers (PLU Code 1652), with expiration date of Nov. 20, 2022
This recall involves a very small number of containers of food — just 14 in all, according to Woody’s Pet Food Deli.
A customer had submitted a complaint about a different Woody’s product to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which tested some samples and found salmonella bacteria in one of the samples.
The affected Raw Cornish Hen products were sold in containers with a green “With Supplements” sticker and a separate white sticker showing an expiration date of “11/20/22.”
All 14 recalled containers were sold from the company’s retail stores in Minneapolis, Saint Paul and Woodbury, Minnesota. No other Woody’s Pet Food Deli products are part of this recall.
According to the FDA, “Salmonella can affect animals eating the product, and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated products — especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.”
Woody’s says its own investigation is ongoing and that it “will resume production when the problem is resolved.”
Interestingly, Woody’s has no problem letting consumers know, up front, that its products may contain salmonella. The company states on its own website:
“Our raw pet food[s] are not pasteurized and are not for human consumption. They may contain harmful bacteria. We use organic acids to control these bacteria, but there is no 100% way to kill all harmful bacteria except for cooking. Improper handling of our raw food can result in bacterial infections both for the pet and pet parents. Please refer to our safe food handling tips.”
If you have any of the 14 affected containers, do not feed the food to your pet. Instead, return the food to the store for a refund.
“Consumers should thoroughly wash their hands after handling the affected product or cleaning up potentially contaminated items and surfaces,” according to the FDA announcement.

According to research by Petful, this is the 2nd known recall for Woody’s Pet Food Deli. The previous recall, in January 2019, also involved the potential for salmonella contamination.
